Physical Education
Intent
At Collingwood we want all pupils to have participated in a sporting club and interschool competition. We will encourage our pupils to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
We recognise the value of Physical Education and sport. The primary aim of the PE curriculum at Collingwood is to ensure pupils experience taking part in a wide range of physical activities. Pupils are also encouraged to engage in competitive sports with the hope that their interest extends beyond the curriculum and into extra-curricular clubs and competitions. The curriculum aims to invigorate the mind as well as the body; a healthy mind is equally as important as a healthy body.
Implementation
The teaching of PE sets clear expectations and targets across all year groups. All PE sessions enable pupils to explore and investigate, be creative, plan and select, practise and refine, present their work, observe and evaluate, take on different roles and responsibilities and strive to improve on their individual personal bests.
In EYFS, the children will be introduced to basic movements and provided with opportunities for developing these. This will help develop balance, agility and co-ordination. As they progress to Key Stage 1, the activities and learning from EYFS will be developed to allow the children to master these skills. The design of the curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2 will continue to develop the skills for the previous term, year and cycle.
Teaching also aims to be fun and enable pupils to experience success in sport, develop good sporting attitudes, understand basic rules, experience positive competition and learn in a safe environment. Teaching provides consistent and clear quality feedback to pupils to help them improve and identify the next steps in their learning. Lessons include the use of appropriate and well-chosen, high quality resources to aid learning and progression of skills and technique.
In Year 5 and 6, our Sports Leaders plan and deliver supported lessons in conjunction with the PE coordinator. This enables our children to develop their communication and leadership skills. It also encourages a culture of mutual respect for their peers and team work skills.
Impact
P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities.
At Collingwood, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect
At Collingwood, we recognise the contribution of physical education and sport to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an innovative, varied P.E. curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children.
We ensure that all pupils:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities, achieving their personal best
- lead healthy, active lives
- embrace sporting values (respect, honesty, passion, self-belief, determination, teamwork)
- swim competently/confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m
Sports day
During the summer term, all children take part in sports day. They will have the opportunity to participate in various competative sporting activities. The years 5 and 6 children help to run the sports day for the younger children.
Weekly Dance Lessons
National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA)
Each week children at Collingwood Primary School from Nursery to Year 6 have a dance lesson. This culminates in two fantastic shows, one at Christmas and one at the end of the Summer Term. The shows are performed on stage for the parents at NAPA 's theatre with professional sound and lighting.
Swimming
All children have the opportunity to take part in school swimming lessons. Children usually have a block of sessions in year 4 and the aim is for all children to be able to competently swim 25m. If this is not achieved in year 4, children go for extra lessons in years 5 and 6.
Extra Curricular Activities
A wide variety of extra curricular sporting activities are offered through out the year both competative and non- competative (taster sessions). Collingwood Primary School is part of the Hull Active Schools group which encourages children to participate in sport. We participate in the Hull Schools football league, take part in cross country competitions and plan in taster sessions for a range of year groups, encouraging children to try new sports.
Hymers
We have a strong relationship with our local secondsary school, Hymers. Each year GCSE students and Duke of Edinbrugh award participants come in to Collingwood to coach the children in sporting activities for a period of 6 weeks.
Rackets Cubed
Rackets Cubed is a UK Registered Charity that runs integrated Squash, Tennis, Education (STEM / Maths) and Nutrition Programmes for local inner-city children from high IDACI schools . Year 4 children at Collingwood Primary School are currently taking part on Wednesday after school developing tennis skills, maths and then having a nutitious meal.
