PSHE

Intent

Our intention is that when children leave Collingwood Primary School they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive, and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being.

Our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education curriculum enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

Implementation

Pupils are taught PSHE using ‘Jigsaw’ which is a progressive scheme of work, covering all of the above and 'aims to prepare children for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world’. There is a strong emphasis on emotional Literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. It includes mindfulness to allow children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, and focus.

The PSHE curriculum is set out in our long-term plan. Progressive sequences of lessons are then planned with depth and accurate subject knowledge which builds upon prior learning for all children at Collingwood.

At Collingwood, carefully planned sequences of lessons ensure we give children the opportunity for relevant learning experiences which help them navigate their world and the way they conduct relationships. Every half term, all year groups, from EYFS through to Year 6, focus on the same theme at the same time. Our focuses each half term are; being in my world, celebrating differences, dreams and goals, healthy me, relationships and changing me. This enables each theme to start with an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for adults and children.

At Collingwood we endeavour to stay abreast of changes in the world that may impact our children particularly related to social media. When issues arise, we ensure our lessons are adapted to cover this or it is addressed at a different point throughout the day such as during circle-time, coaching or assemblies. PSHE is interwoven in everything we do, across the curriculum.

In addition to PSHE lessons, we are a restorative school which enables our children to solve problems amicably with greater independence and to consider the needs of others. It is our goal to empower children with life-long skills that they will use throughout their young life into adulthood to enable them to function well in society.

Impact

By the time our children leave Collingwood they will:

  • be able to approach a range of real-life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life
  • be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society
  • appreciate difference and diversity
  • recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty
  • be able to understand and manage their emotions
  • be able to look after their mental health and well-being
  • be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
  •  understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age-appropriate level
  •  have respect for themselves and others.
  •  have a positive self esteem

The Jigsaw Approach

The Six Puzzles

There are six Puzzles in Jigsaw that are designed to progress in sequence from the start of each academic year:

AUTUMN TERM
Term 1: Being Me in My World
Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

SPRING TERM
Term 3: Dreams and Goals
Term 4: Healthy Me

SUMMER TERM
Term 5: Relationships
Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Each Puzzle has six Pieces (lessons) which work towards an ‘end product’, for example, The School
Learning Charter or The Garden of Dreams and Goals. Each Piece has two Learning Intentions: one
is based on specific PSHE learning (purple) and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills
development (green).

The whole school works on the same Puzzle at the same time, meaning that each Puzzle can be launched
with a whole-school assembly and learning can be celebrated by the whole school in a meaningful way.
