Modern Foreign Languages
At Collingwood, children are exposed to a wide range of languages due to the diverse backgrounds of the families that attend our school. Alongside this, French is taught to all KS2 children.
We use Language Angels to ensure all children have access to high quality resources and games they can play at home.

Intent
The 2014 National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages aims to ensure that all children:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language
- are able to speak with increasing confidence and fluency and that they are continually trying to improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- can write at varying length using different taught grammatical structures
- discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
At Collingwood, we are committed to ensuring that we provide a high-quality languages education. This is one that encourages curiosity about language as well as developing creativity to explore and use it. We aim to introduce pupils to languages in an enjoyable and accessible way so that all pupils can benefit from improved oracy, literacy, speaking and listening skills alongside developing cultural awareness.
Implementation
Modern Foreign Language lessons take place across Key Stage 2 and support the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in French. The curriculum is delivered using a programme called Language Angels. One French unit is completed per half term. Children are taught to listen attentively to spoken French, as well as being given the opportunity to practise speaking aloud using games, songs and role-play activities. Reading and writing French are taught alongside the listening and speaking activities, with phonetics units helping pronunciation and spelling.
Impact
- Children start to develop an awareness of where the French language, as well as others they may come across, are spoken across the world, helping them to develop cultural awareness.
- Develops ability of children to speak and spell in French due to the grammatical and phonetic lessons taught.
- Aids understanding of grammatical concepts in both French and their home language.
- Children gain confidence through speaking another language aloud.
- Improved literacy and oracy skills.
