Art
Intent
At Collingwood Primary School Art and Design is a valued part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Our intent is for children to develop a love of art and provide them with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful artists.
Our curriculum values pupil's individual ideas and is dedicated to providing students with the freedom to explore and express themselves through a variety of media. As well as acquiring new skills and technqiues, children will learn about a range of artists and the impact of their work. When relevant, Art and Design will link to taught topics to ensure children are fully immersed in their art lessons and offer a creative way to develop the children's knowledge, skills and understanding.
Each year, every child in the school will participate in a whole school art week, during which they will study a chosen artist, learning about them and their work and will all produce a painting in the style of that artist which will be proudly displayed in school. At Collingwood we encourage a love of art beyond the classroom, with our after school art clubs being very popular.
Implementation
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning, our curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive. At Collingwood children are given the opportunity to work on the three core strands of drawing, painting and sculpture each year, enabling them to continually build upon previously acquired skills. Each year group will learn a range of skills and techniques, use various mediums and develop the ability to experiment with different kinds of art, craft and design; increasing the pupils appreciation of art and enhancing their creativity.
Impact
We aim for our children at Collingwood to be proud of both their creative process and finished products in Art and Design. Our intended outcome is for pupils to develop a passion for art and creativity and to have accomplished, improved and embedded a range of artistic skills.
The impact of our curriculum is evident across our art displays in school, which highlight the progressive work children produce over their time at Collingwood. Pupils produce high quality pieces, showcasing a variety of skills and techniques.
